In the spring edition of Classic Record Collector, David Patmore reveals an interesting discovery from the Masterworks vaults: "left" and "right" takes of some of the 1941 recordings by Leopold Stokowski and the All-American Youth Orchestra. When the separate 78 discs are carefully synchronized, the result is indeed primitive stereophonic sound. Here is an example uploaded to YouTube a couple of days ago.
Three decades ago, a similar "two mikes, two cutting lathes" take with Sir Edward Elgar on the podium was rediscovered in the HMV vaults – side three of his 1931 recording of Cockaigne. Mark Obert-Thorn remastered and synchronised the sides to produce a plausible "stereo" take, which was issued on a Naxos Historical CD in 2006.
